Black Transnational Resistance-NKA

Two years ago, I attended the opening night of the exhibition Radical Love at the Ford Foundation Gallery. I immediately felt at home. I went back the day after. I wanted to be face-to-face with Rashaad Newsome’s collage: Look Back at It which refers Pablo Picasso’s painting Les Demoiselles d’ Avignon.

Yet there is a glitch. The action is not in a brothel. We are in the vogue ballroom scene, a counterculture sparked in the 1970s by the Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ communities in New York. In the silence of the gallery, I took some notes to keep track of my overwhelming emotions. You can read my thoughts in NKA, Journal of Contemporary African Art (Duke University Press). The article is available HERE (limited time).
